The Singapore Temple was first announced during the April 2021 general conference by Church President Russell M. Nelson. Less than two years before, on a visit to Singapore in November 2019, President Nelson said he prayed for a day when the Saints there would have a temple of their own.
It will be the first temple constructed in Singapore, a sovereign island city-state in maritime Southeast Asia. The Church has been present in Singapore since 1968.
From the beginning, Latter-day Saint communities in Singapore have represented diverse ethnic and national backgrounds. Singapore has drawn this diverse community because it is a hub of Southeast Asian commerce, education and culture.
Today, more than 3,200 Latter-day Saints in six congregations call Singapore home.
Latter-day Saints consider temples the house of the Lord and the most sacred places of worship on earth. Temples differ from the Church’s meetinghouses (chapels). All are welcome to attend Sunday worship services and other weekday activities at local meetinghouses. The primary purpose of temples is for faithful of the Church of Jesus Christ to participate in sacred ceremonies, such as marriages, which unite families forever, and proxy baptisms on behalf of deceased ancestors who did not have the opportunity to be baptized while living.
